A look at history
Basketball has had a tumultuous history in Hamburg, marked by several restarts. In 2001, BCJ Hamburg filed for bankruptcy, leading to the temporary disappearance of Bundesliga basketball from the city. Subsequent projects, such as the Baskets Albag Hamburg, aimed to establish a professional team with support from the Basketball Bundesliga but ultimately failed. Meanwhile, Marvin Willoughby launched the "Sport ohne Grenzen" initiative, blending youth development with grassroots sports.
The year 2013 marked a turning point: Pascal Roller, Marvin Willoughby, and other partners introduced the Hamburg Towers as an ambitious basketball project. By 2014, they secured a spot in ProA, Germany's second division. After years of steady progress, the Towers achieved promotion to the Bundesliga in 2019 and reached the playoffs for the first time in the 2020/21 season. Now known as the Veolia Towers Hamburg, with a focus on youth development and new facilities like a state-of-the-art training center, the club is cementing its position as a key player in German basketball.
Review of the previous season
The 2023/24 season for the Veolia Towers Hamburg was defined by challenges, growth, and a major milestone celebration. After a turbulent start marked by inconsistent performances, the team needed time to find its footing. The appointment of Benka Barloschky as head coach proved to be a stabilizing influence, especially during a period when injuries and fluctuating form tested the squad's depth.
As the season progressed, the team found its rhythm. Key players like Yoeli Childs and Lukas Meisner took on leadership roles, while young talents such as Kendale McCullum and homegrown prospects from the youth academy made significant contributions. Despite setbacks, the Towers managed to solidify their position in the league's mid-table.
A season highlight was the anniversary match against Bayern Munich at the Barclays Arena, which set a new attendance record with 12,000 spectators. Although the Towers narrowly missed the playoffs, they showcased promising potential for the future. With a strong focus on youth development and an enhanced infrastructure, the club looks ahead with optimism to the coming season.
