A look at history
The Skyliners Frankfurt are a basketball club from Frankfurt am Main. Since their founding in 1999, when they took over the Bundesliga license of TV Tatami Rhöndorf, they played in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) until 2023.
From the 2000/01 season until September 2005, they played under the name Opel Skyliners, then as Deutsche Bank Skyliners. From 2011 to 2024, the team was known as Fraport Skyliners. In their first season, the Skyliners celebrated winning the German Cup.
Their greatest success was winning the German Championship in 2004. Internationally, they also achieved significant success, including winning the FIBA Europe Cup in 2016. They also participated in competitions like the Saporta Cup, the EuroLeague, and the ULEB Cup.
In the 2023/24 season, the Skyliners achieved promotion back to the BBL after spending one year in Pro A (Germany’s second-highest league).
Review of the Previous Season
After their relegation, the plan of the Frankfurt Skyliners was clear: return to the Basketball Bundesliga as quickly as possible. This ambitious goal was achieved on May 26, 2024, with a victory in the fifth semifinal game against Trier (85:76). Reaching the ProA final not only secured their spot in the top division but also highlighted the exceptional achievement of the Skyliners, who qualified for promotion in their first year after relegation.
Since the introduction of the ProA playoffs in 2011/2012, only five teams have managed to achieve this feat. The Frankfurt Skyliners joined this elite group, demonstrating how unique their journey was in a league often underestimated and highly competitive. This triumph will go down as a milestone in the club's history.
